German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence managed to come up with a touchscreen steering wheel.
The invention was officially presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems and its main goal is to help the driver control a vehicle easier and safer. Unlike traditional steering wheels that in the majority of cases divert the driver's attention, the new touchscreen steering wheel allows one to control different functionalities while keeping eyes on the road.
The wheel is just 11 millimeters thick and boasts an acrylic body. In addition, the device features infrared LEDs and an infrared camera mounted at its bottom. The camera senses the reflections when the driver touches the screen.
The driver can also navigate a map without taking their hands off the wheel. It would be interesting to note that the touchscreen steering wheel has sensor systems developed for analyzing road conditions and traffic.
